I talked to some members on the cichlid-forum about doing a 30L tank with a demasoni community in it, They say about 9 of them would work, i have read that they don't need a very big tank but i hear that they have a lot of attitude. Just wondering what you guys think and how many to get and if you have had experience with them in the past. Also I read yellow labs would work well with them.

Thanks

A 30L is going to be a little small and 9 is a lot for that size tank... I have 18 in a 75 but my tank is 2.5 times bigger than a 30L.

I think it'll work but man, you need a LOT of hiding places, no clear areas of sight, the fish need to be able to hide and dart around stuff.

Make sure u always have a good number of dems in there i had a group of 12 in my 55g and i took most out to add some acei. I left around 7 but in a few days i had 2

so lots of hiding spots and keep a decent amount of them? some people swear they must have 12 them to work as a community? but the guy i talked to on the other forum said 9 should work with its of rock work

the key is to have as few males as possible and a large number of females to spread aggression. the smallest setup for demasoni i know of on the site is 9 in a 65 and they have got 22 fry. The smallest setup i can see working is 1 male to 5 or 6 females with plenty of space to hide form the male.

They can be hard to sex, but if you can get a group of 9 with only 1 or 2 males then you really shouldn't have any problems. Just be sure to have lots of rock work. My suggestion would be to buy about 15 fish and then cut down the group to about 9 as they grow up. That way you can try to get better ratios than just randomly buying 9.

The females won't have as much colouring as the males right? this way i can try and pick mostly females at the LFS.

Not with Demasoni... The females can be as colored as the males are.. They are typically smaller as adults though. That alone doesn't help you much when buying juveniles...

I've got five dems and five yellow labs in a 40g right now while I'm fixing up their new 135g home. I just piled up the slate with small pieces to make tons of overhangs and caves. It seems to work, because they have plenty of places to get out of each others way. If you set it up right you could do five or six in a 30l tank, but many more would be pushing it.

One other note.. Female to female aggression can be almost as bad as male to male & male to female... With Demasoni, it isn't only about male/female ratios and how many overall. They are more complicated than that.
