I've never had any kind of Dempsey before or maybe I'd know the answer. But this one's getting quite a hump/dip on his forehead. Is that normal or is he deformed in some way? The other one has just a rounded forehead. This is the blurry picture but it's the one that shows the forehead. This one has always been the fat/thick one, teh other one is more slender. They're 4-4 1/2" long now, I've had them 4 1/2 months and they've grown real good (were 3/4" when I got them).
Can anyone tell me if somethings wrong with him?

It's called a "beak-face". Unfortunately its very common in some EBJD lines. One of the problems is that it often does not show up until the fish is mature. Its not usually considered a desirable trait, and most reputable breeders are trying to breed that trait out of the EB bloodlines. It looks like it has some good color and finnage though.

I never planned on breeding either of them so I don't care about that. As long as it's not something that's going to kill him I can live with his funny face if he can :-)
Thank you for clearing that up, much appreciated.

Thanks. He's still my baby :-) I may get fish for their looks in the beginning but the deciding factor in which fish I keep for life is personality. And these 2 Dempsey's have lots of that.

i think it looks totally wicked. post pics of him later and see if the bump grows

You are most welcome. He should live a long an healthy life. I know what you mean, I've got several JDs that I will never breed, but they will have a place to stay for their entire lives, because of their intelligence and personality.

Good luck with them,
Mark

Darn nice fish.. wish i had an EBJDs

bfhslilred93, it's an undesireable trait though :-) I looked it up and as they get older it almost looks like their faces are pinched, sort of like Blood Parrots. But I've got those and love em', too.
Zero, I was a little wary about getting mine because so many people have problems with them not doing well, going blind, dying for no reason, etc. If this is the only problem mine ends up having then I'll count my blessings.
Mark, thank you for your help & kind words.

Breeders of EBJD tend to not like the beak face to EBJD's. However if you dont plan to breed it and if it doesnt bother you, then thats one awesome EBJD. Its up to you. Some will not like it while others will.
