there is fish at my local pet store that i can not recognize. it has te head of a jack but the mouth of a geophagus.

Hard to say, especially without a pic. The LFS that I work at has 4 fish (donations) right now that are all new world mutts.
The guy that brought them in was told that they were texas when they were juvies, but now they all look different with a whole soup pot of jack dempsey, convict, texas, vieja, and red devil mixed in. Not a single one of them look alike, and they're all fron the same batch of fry.
