Hello all,
I was wondering how often dempseys will lay eggs?
I transfered my pair (8-inch male,5-inch female) to thier own tank after
the female almost killed my fh (6-inch).
After they were settled for most of the day I gave them some food before bed.
upon waking up the next day (hungover) I could not believe how dirty thier tank was.
About half way through my siphon job I noticed all the eggs:cry:
Well there is some left, maybe 200 or so. Some are white but alot are still transparent. If they were seminated how long till they hatch?
And if I messed everything up how soon could they spawn again?
Thank you for any info.

upon furthere examination, the female is back fanning the remaining eggs.
about half are a brownish colour and the others are transparent almost no white ones now(female must have ate them) I decided to put a towel over the tank for now as I am getting tired of my female mouthing obsenities to me...lol....
I have a 30g ready if any hatch.
how long should I keep them with the parents?

im suprised the eggs are still good after siphoning but i really dont kno how long till u seperate them

What are you going to do with the fry when/if they grow up?

The answer to that question will heavily influence any advice as to what to do next…

FYI… some people remove the eggs, others remove the wigglers, others remove them as soon as they are free swimming, some leave them with the parents a couple weeks, others leave them with the parents for the duration of their lives… it all depends on what your looking to do with them and what your willing to put into them…

Thank-you for your replies.
If/when they ever hatch, I will remove then when they are free swimmers, or atleast eating flakes.
Don't want to leave them with the parents to long, as they are only in a 45g (36"x 18"x 16"). I will grow some out in a 30g that Im not using right now. Probably use most for live food. How often do healthy Dempseys spawn on average? once every couple months?

If you have power filters or anything like that be sure to either cover them or remove the fry as soon as possible. They'll be sucked into the filters pretty quick.

I don't like messing with fry when they're really tiny so I'd remove the eggs themselves. If you wait until the fry are big enough to eat flakes the parents might eat them.
