is it normal for a convict to pick with a dempsey? i heard dempseys were tough cookies? well i bought one today and my half blind, old, rescue con is chasing it around like a lunatic :nilly:.. cant catch him, or see him much rofl tho so i think all will be good for now idk any ideas? oh and i dumped a ton of hiding spots so they keep getting stuck racing threw it all.. its quite interesting lol

How big are the fish, if the Con is bigger than the Jack, then it will probably pick on it. If the con is smaller than the Jack then they will usually lay off, either that or your con has some serious anger issues to be attacking a JD thats bigger than him. I have these two types of fish and they get along great and are always swimming around together like they are a pair or something. In fact the con will sometimes defend my JD from my oscar, I would probably just give them some time.

^^ agree...con is probably bigger and thats why its picking a fight. It may want to be the dominate one. I have a convict and a JD also...Second I brought the 3"-4" convict home and put it in with my JD and others, my JD was going after him and nipping him and showing him hes the boss. But, it could of also been because the JD was already in an established tank and had his territory. My JD is still the boss though, doubt the con would even have a chance if i put my jd in another tank with the con and the con had an established territory in that tank.

You gotta remember though, all fish are individuals and some are more aggressive for their species and some are not so aggressive for their species.

An aquarium is like prison, you have to bust a few heads right away to establish the lay of the land. Once the pecking order is established they will often settle down.

Lol, thats a good analogy/way to look at it

wow i ;love all your answers lmao.. im good as long as they dont cause injuries i have to fix!! i turned the light off and it helped alot.. i think hes younger than i thought too.. they get like ten inches right? so maybe hes only six months old?

Cons are super aggressive. At least mine was, he killed a 6" jag when he was only 2.5".
ok now im worried cuz i cannot feed him :( he hides 24/7.. should i put my con in another tank for a while so jd can establish some sort of territory? i have a 29 gallon he can go in (since hes bein bad) lol

the new male jd is 3" (alot narrower than the tall fat con) and my male con is 5 1/2" including tail fin (i dont know if u include the tail) im thinking the jd is younger than a year.. my con is def an adult but was beat up by another male when i got him :( i had to nurse his tail back which was gone, and he cannot see well.. i have a hard time getting him to see his food.. i had hoped he wasnt going to be the prob!! it was the new fish i was worried about? i was wrong obviously??!! my con has lived with dwarf guarami, three month old baby cons, a pink tetra, and two snails.. till now has NEVER shown aggression. im worried about baby jd for he is hiding and i cannot feed him :( if u agree i will put my con in a 29 gallon permanently, and have baby jd grow out in the 55 gallon.. thanx all this is site is keeping my sanity and my fish alive!! common sense and instinct only go so far, im only a year and a half experienced, and i dont want that to be the cause of fish tank wars in my livingroom!! lol

I ve never had much luck isolating and reintroducing two fish that just have issues. I tried this experiment with a small GT that chased and
beat the tar out of any fish the same size or smaller. 60 gallon, 90 gallon 300 gallon......tank size didn't matter and isolation only worked for
a few hours then it was back to the beat down. The Gt wasn't a particularly pretty fish, so we decided to part ways......moral of this story?
You just never really know...

that being said, my female convict is the smallest fish in my 300 and is bar far the toughest of the lot. She is usually the troublemaker.....but
generally only with like sized fish. She will flare up on bigger fish, but won't chase........
