I just had the privilege of meeting Alex Saunders, the zookeeper for conservation fish in the zoo. He showed me their current and past conservation efforts with these endangered fish.
I'm happy to see that the Denver zoo has made great strides to raise Malagasy cichlids. Currently, they have many P. grandidieri (sorry about spelling) that they have raised and bred. In fact, they will be making a display with these guys.
They have cared for Lamena, Insultas, Maculatus, Damba AKA Petiti and menarambo. At present, they only have a few menarambo that they raised from fry as well as some insulatus.
But, because of the success hobbyists have had in raising up Malagasy cichlids; the zoo is now shifting its emphasis to malagasy rainbow fish and killis. Too all you malagasy cichlid keepers, great work!
I know that rainbows and killis aren't monsterfish, but since they are endangered hobbyist should consider keeping them. Many of them a very beautiful community fish.
