So I thought I’d share this information because I don’t believe it is common knowledge and it might save you from dealing with the complete and utter bulls**t this situation is. I have a lung issue so it was recommended I run an ionizer in the house. Now I spend a lot of time in the garage, my fish room, so I thought to myself I’ll run the ionizer out there for a little while (about 45 minutes ). I set the timer and left the unit out there for the night. I opened the door at 6 am this morning to find the unit still running, turns out the timer was faulted and wouldn’t click into the off position. I turn around to the electric eel tank and don’t see him. I was frantically searching the tank when the dogs alerted to him on the ground….dead. Suffocated to the point of jumping out of the tank with weighted lids. If you have ever lost a fish because of your own doing you know the feeling you get. I’ve had this guy since he was 5 inches he died at 26 inches…RIP MARTY the electric eel. But wait there’s more!!! In complete shock and disbelief and angry honesty, I maneuvered to the next tank with my eyes practically closed and I immediately yelled “no f-ing way!” At this point I dropped to my knees absolutely enraged with myself because my beautiful Arapaima had also suffocated in my stupidity…RIP. At this point my two most appreciated fish were gone so I took a step back to see all of my tanks and I started checking off who was still with me. Albino arrowana, red tails, leopards, tiger shovel nose, bichir, peacock bass, oscars, plecos, iridescent sharks…all still okay to a slightly uplifting relief. But Little Timmy and oh Little Tommy my albino turtles…also perished terribly…RIP my little ones.
So lesson learned here, any surface breather will not fair well with an ionizer. I hope others can take this information and save there fish. Now I’m going to sit in the garage and stare at my empty tanks for awhile.
