So I want an Oscar and was thinking about throwing one in a 48"x 30"x 17" tank. I know it is weird dimensions but you work with what you got. I am not worried about the length or width housing one for many years. Especially since I like to buy small fish and grow them out, but would 17" depth be enough for a 12"+ fish. I keep going back and forth on this in my head so I am looking for some advise from you all. How tall is a 12"+ Oscar?

is it 48 long by 30 wide by 17 tall?

I'm assuming you're meaning 17 tall. If so I'd say it should be okay, I have a friend with a similar sized tank that's 72in long, 30 in wide, by 18 in deep/tall. They've housed 2 oscars and a pleco for about 4 years now.

my 12" oscar is only 4.5" high so you should be fine with a 17" tall tank.

edit: you sure it's not 72x18x24? so that would be 24 tall and 18 wide typical 135.

The tank they have is a 72x24x17, it's a 125g wide.

interesting then your stand would be a 72x24 foot print, good enough for a 225 when you upgrade.
