desert dwelling lizards

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Armadillo lizards I have kept - they seem to prefer a more barky substrate and more moisture than a desert lizard, per se.

Fat Tail Geckos, Cat Geckos, Mini Geckos, that kind of thing. A 20 really isn't much room for a lizard as lizards are often active and roam a lot.

my local pet store just got in some brand new baby leopard geckos so i may get 3 those? (is 3 a good number for a 20 gallon?) but i will hold off to see if any one else can think of any other desert lizards :)

I have only kept 2 adult Leopard Geckos per 20 gallon aquarium. I just aquired a 30 gallon long that I think I may use as a new home for my adult pair. Three leo's IMO is pushing it for a 20 gallon long.

Sungazers, (aka Girdle-tailed Lizards) are a really cool desert lizard that give birth to live young. I didn't know that we can't get them here anymore. Oh well.

You can get the smaller species but the Sungazer (Cordylus giganteus) I believe is banned in the US (I can't seem to find it now but it's a CITES animal anyway).

Oh & re: leos in a 20 I'd stick with a pair...

Texas Horned Lizards stay small and would be fine in a small group in a 20 long. Make sure they are CB or you may have feeding issues (among other issues). I bought three last year at a show. Two died within weeks, but the third is going strong. Not too expensive either. I got all three for $25.

What do you feed them? They pretty much only eat ants in the wild.
