Recently i noticed a brown dirt type of material floating in my sump filter. i shined a flash light over my sump (since my sump is tinted black) and holy crap this stuff was everywhere. i started to notice this stuff becoming more and more frequent and visible in my tank. yesterday i noticed the problem has escalated, maybe because of me stiring this stuff up in the sump, i don't know. but it is covering all ratio and space of my tank. i have been doing a lot of research today and have found this type of algae called "Detritus" or "Mulm" this stuff can be transported from fish bought at your LFS that had spores attached to it or driftwood etc. etc. but in all definitions that ive found, it specifically states that this detritus BY IT SELF is not harmful but it has the potential to merge with other bad bacteria or fungus and cause catastrophic damge to your tank. the best thing to do is when you spot this algae in your tank remove it with a wet dry vac or cyphon. this stuff is very small and very light so it moves in the water fast. i also gave my hoses a quick look and this stuff is trapped on the inside of my hoses. i have to replace all of them. im going to my LFS this weekend and buying healthy bacteria in a bottle and pour it my tank. i read that this is a good way to kill this stuff. all it takes is a single spore and BOOM your infested with this algae. the fish i have, i hold dear to me and i just dont want to take the risk of loosing them to something like this. if anybody has any information on this, please feel free to teach me about this infestation.
