My sister is going to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit next Tuesday to start her cancer treatment.

My parents are really worried because my mom says, "You need an armed guard just to cross the street!" I guess my grandpa was treated at the same hospital in the early 90's and their was a lot crime around the hospital. In fact, they had hospital security guards escort them over to KFC to pick up lunch, "for the patient's safety."

Is anyone familiar with this area of Detroit? Is it really THAT bad? I want to calm my parent's fears about my sister's safety while at Henry Ford Hospital.

During the day there are so many people around, it will be fine....although there will probably be some street/homeless people asking for spare change, and the occasional person that doesn't seem "quite all there" upstairs. I wouldn't recommend going way off the beaten path into the surrounding neighborhoods, but immediately around the hospital should be fine. Now, at night....stay inside the hospital buildings just in case.

I live in Detroit, Work in Detroit, Shop in Detroit, Play in Detroit...
Pretty much everything you hear about this city is a bunch of Bull..

It is a pretty calm place that if your not looking for trouble your not likely to find it. Mind your own business and have some common sense and this place is no different than any large city.

I live about a block from the Henry ford in Midtown. It is quite safe and the neighborhood is very different now from even 13 years ago when I moved there. There has been substantual improvements in the areas economy and as a result Crime and safety issues are really minor..
