As some of you know, I've got a 4200 gallon pond in the making, but will set up a temp pond made out of a pool this summer. Anyways, I've been offered a free crystal eyed catfish about 16 inches long. I've got a spare tank for him until my others (rtc, tsn and longbarbed) get close to that size, which at the rate their going, would be a few months...but have been reading that it's best if these guys are kept by themselves....

anyone have experience with these fish and can give me a clue??? they are amazing and I think I might just take it and keep in in a separate tank forever, but I would love to have it in my catfish pond....

I've had one for about a year now and I haven't had many problems with tankmates. He does defend his hide spot with some VERY aggressive snaps, but I haven't lost anything to his rage.

My guy is a foot, so not quite as big as yours, but to be honest, I'm moving him to his own tank because I've noticed his aggression gets triggered a little quicker than it used to so I'm going to play it safe and keep him in his own tank for the long run.

just the person I was hoping to hear from....read just now your post on yours.

herm...seems a shame to have just this guy in a tank, but that's quickly seeming to be the way to go.

Attempts to keep H. Wyckii and Wyckioides with tankmates almost always end in tragedy. Many people report success with sub 1 ft. specimens and tankmates, but I've never heard of a large mature specimen that could be kept with other fish.

Stop it...you're going to make me blush...:D

Yeah, it does stink knowing that tankmates will probably be killed...regardless if they are edible or not. The one upside is that they will create quite a bond with you when they are the only fish in the tank and they get all the attention.

My wyckii will actually let you hand feed him. As soon as the hood is opened and he knows its feeding time he comes out of his cave and will wait for you to feed him.
