This may be a stupid question, mostly because the product looks pretty self explanatory, but how exactly would I hook a fish on to a dial scale. I wouldn't assume you just jam the scales hook through its lip, but I cant find any idiots guides to using one. Is this just a tool for fish your planning to take home, or is there a way you can catch and release with it? Im only asking because I just bought a scaleless pair of rapala lip grips, on sale for 11 bucks, and I had originally planned on getting a lip grip/scale combo. Now I'm looking to pick up a cheap scale option so I can get an idea of how heavy the fish I am catching are. Please bear with my ignorance.

i think the safest way for the fish is to put them in a bucket or something softer, hook the thing to that and then just subtract the weight of the random object after they've been released, cuz most of those scales are designed to either go through the lip or beside the gills if i remember correctly

They have bags for weighing fish in. But yeah if im keeping it i just put it under the jaw bone in a membrane. Also it helps to take a file to the hook to give it a sharp point.

I figured that was the case, thanks guys. Nothing could be that cheap and effective. I'll have to give this one some thought, I appreciate the ideas. We still got snow on the ground here so I got some time. Im fired up though, can't wait to get out there. Obsessing over equipment preparations is helping me get through the winter, I am going to be ready as hell that first day.

its the gills pretty much where your fingers go..but if you are taking it home and got a scale use that or if theres a scale at the "local" pond or whatever it is should have a scale...
