Diatom filter help

I found an unused (but 25 year old) vortex diatom filter in my parents garage rafters and I'm hoping to use it to polish the water in my 125g, however neither me nor my father have used a diatom in 25 years and don't remember how to use or maintain the filter. Any directions as to how to use the filter and clean it after use will be greatly appreciated. Also this filter was purchased for a 20g, but since it will be used only as needed I was thinking that I can simply run it a lot longer and it should be fine any thoughts on this?

I dusted off the unit and its a d-1, while not the ideal size I'm assuming it will due, still not sure how to use it though.

I would start by cleaning it up and making sure it doesn't leak.
The seals may have gone bad.

I fired her up and all systems a go, seals are so cheap that I'm going ahead and ordering a replacement since I need the u-tubes, strainers, intake tubes and powder. Pretty stoked to be paying $15 for misc. parts instead of $130 for a new one

I have one of the same vintage sitting in the basement, it still has water in it from 20 years ago. I'll have to get it out and clean it up. I'm just afraid to open it cause of what the water may smell like.
