I am thinking about adding a Diatom filter to my 75gal discus setup, I am currently running an xp3 on it and i still get little floating particles throughout the tank. I do a 10 gal water change every other day and 20 gal on the weekend. I have tried stepping up the water changes and have had no effect. WOuld the Diatom Filter clear this up. I looking at the vortex XL. I would like to put it inline of the Renas return line is this possible will it mess up either filter doing this. Also I have seen that the Xl is meant to be run continously and on intervals up to a total of 8 hrs weekly. Which is true? your comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

lets just say after about 2 hrs of running it, it can run as hot as the sun. why not put a micron filter sock on your return instead?

they are good for using evry once in a while. like when you do a water change stir up the substrate to get detritus in the water column and then run it

So basically for around $100 (about what ive seen em going for, maybe a little less on ebay) its not really worth it.

As far as the micron sock, I have never heard of that, know of a place that carries them? I have the included micron filtration from the rena, how would these compare in filtration size?

Also I have seen that the diatoms will remove parasite, is this true or is it just an advertising gimmick?

I get my micron filter bags at www.filterbag.com . Filterbags work great used in a sump. For other types of filters, micron rated filter pads would also work before or after your sponge as well. Almost any online aquarium supplier carries these.

Diatom filters are great for occasional water polishing.
Everytime someone says the vortex is a lousy filter, its cause they ran it continuosly.
theyre great for occasional water polishing.
I use 50micron filter cloths in my sump for fine filtering
