Hello everyone just wondering if anyone uses a diatom filter? Also if anyone can explain to me what they do? I have been reading online but it just keep saying that is great to get rid of green water, is it good for other reasons as well?

Thanks

A diatomatious earth filter is a sealed canister with a very fine membrane containing a powdered substance (DE) this powder traps even the smallest particles in the water and produces crystal clear water and can also remove free algae. The problem with them is that they clog VERY quickly and have a huge power draw for thier size making them very ineffeciant.

Most people who use them, run them for a short time to polish the water or clear up a slightly cloudy tank but don't use it as the main filtration. I used one for a short time but eventually came to the conclusion that they are simply not worth the trouble IMO.

Yep...

They used to be used in shop fronts decades ago to show off the tanks on special days. But these are only good for running when for example there is a disease outbreak, you want to clear up the water, get rid of medications.

They are not intended for long use. So running one for a maximum of 6 IMO is best. Then replace the catridges and turn on again if need be.

These filters trap anything down to 1 micron, so they literally 'polish' your water.

Hey, not sure if you're still looking for input, but you've got great timing: I'm running one _right now_.

Very effective little things. Have a picture for proof:

That's the result of 45 minutes of filtering.

That having been said... It pulls more than an amp (!) out of the wall, the filter's good for maybe 2 hours at best before a recharge, the media's a little pricey for dirt, it's loud, messy to clean and I won't leave the house with it running because it gets hotter than a ten dollar pistol.

It pulls less than a micron, though, and if you're working with Ich or green scum or whatnot, it's great for the job. Stronger than a powerhead too.

Edit: Oops. Took me longer to type the same info than Mystix. :)
