having the old green water problem and was thinking of getting one or both. its for my 90 and i was wondering what the pros reccomend
its defently free floating alge/bacteria and the water tests fine

ps. ordered a uv and heard the diatoms are a pain in the snake head

uv for sure 1oo % will clear up the cloudness before g/w and g/w its self diatoms are good for cleaning up after a big algae scrub down or when you disturb the tank at all

UV def are effective against free floating algae. But then i havent used diatom filters on algae so i cannot say which is more effective. To be safe, i also have to say diatom filters are amazing at removing floating particles in the water... nothing beats diatoms at making the water crystal clear.

What is going on that your tank has suspended algae? Might be a thought to get to the root of the problem and fix it.

A modest sized u.v. will kill suspended algae pretty quickly with minimal maintenance to the unit. It might also reduce parasite out brakes.

Diotom filters will clear your water real quickly too however they are not practical for normal use. They will clog very quickly and need cleaning at least once per week. They are great at polishing water and removing tiny particles (even some parasites get filtered out by diotom filters) I will use them after a major cleaning or right after the initial set up to clear up the water but not for daily 24 / 7 filtration.

We just bought a vortex diatom filter system and are having a very difficult time getting it to stay primed!? Any suggestions?

We can't get the motor to run on our brand new Vortex diatom filter system. It runs for a few minutes, then stops. The motor gets very hot right away also. Any suggestions? Thanks!
