has anyone ever tried this in a tank filter. does it work and is it safe. i know it makes water crystal clear. thanks

They used to make Diatom Filters (Whisper, and Vortex). Vortex you can still buy, i believe. Problem is that it clogs very rapidly and would be mainly used to polish water. If you find yourself using Diatom Earth Powder.... Don't buy it from a pet store for $20.00 / lb. Go to a pool place they sell the same stuff for your swimming pool for probably $30.00 a 50 lb. bag.
I have gotten away from Diatom filters and use UV now. If used properly it will kill all parasites the Diatom Powder traps, but it also kills algea and other parasites in the water and can be run all day and night, but the bulb should be replaced yearly. Also make sure your UV pump isnt rated to pump faster than the UV light is rated for or youll be sending water through too fast and it will be useless.
