did I just pick up a crocodile gar?

was at my lfs yesterday and saw a gator gar being traded in but something looked off with the color pattern and i've seen pictures of croc gar before and this one kinda looked like the type I if it is not a croc gar then why is it so golden in color? fish is about 7"-9"

Gar ime are one of those fish you never know what they are going to end up looking like.. some of the nicest patterned juvies end up the drabbest adults. Chances are it will end up a nice looking fish... but no guarantees.

I've found most of my gators end up pretty dark and pattern less. Environment can play a large part in colouration.

that seem like a young gator gar, probably still under a years old so the pattern might change a lot as time go.
