So I've had a 7 inch, 11 year old African featherfin catfish in a 40gallon (downsized for an apartment) for 3 years. Decided he needed a better life. Fish store said okay to there outdoor tank.

But instead if there 900 gallon african cichlid tank, they put him in the 300gallon rescue tank, overstocked with big Oscar's and clownknives.

He seemed fine for the half hour I was there, but I fear he will get beat to death... should I go get him back???

I would say talk to the owners again and see if this was a short term plan or long term plan? Once its in a huge setup it might be hard to catch. A 11 year old fish was your pet for a very very long time. Go back and check up on it. Whats stopping you from going back?

I'm going to say you did right to rehome. The lfs didn't do what they said not putting the Featherfin in the 900 gallon with the African Cichlid.

Nothing stopping me from going back, just wondering what's honestly best for the guy. I'll go and see if I can get him into the cichlid tank. If not then maybe I'll ask for him back, try to find a hobbiest

Once a fish is surrendered back to a LFS. It becomes the store's property.
If the manager of a fish store has to start dealing with remorseful, indecisive fish donors, he will think twice before taking a surrendered fish from the next guy.

So update after two days, he seems pretty good. Just some mild abrasions on one side, no fin damage. I was almost lost sleep over the ghost knife and Oscar's possibly going for him.
I double checked and it's a 500 gallon, glad I did it, he can live his few remaining years left in a place where he can swim much more.
