I was surfing the interwebs, and noticed on northfin's official site (www.northfin.com) that the protien for the cichlid formula is listed as 42% while my bag is listed as 40%. Any ideas? Are they rolling out a new formula?

Here is a screen capture from www.northfin.com

however northinusa, ken's. super cichlids all list 40%, but amazon does list 42%

For example, NorthfinUsa lists it as:

I just got a new bag last week with an expiration of December 2026 and it’s still 40%.

Yes, same with me, all my NF cichlid bags have always had 40% on it.

I contacted NF directly, and Darius personally responded (quite quickly). He said that all new production of the cichlid formula has 42% protein, while the older formula was 40%. He stated that the change happened about 1.5 years ago, but some of the older formula is still in circulation. He emphasized that, even if you have a bag with the old formula, it will still be fresh so long as before the expiration date.

I appreciated how fast he replied to my inquiry.

That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me as I ordered two 500g bags directly from the Northfinusa website on Black Friday. Both bags are good until December 2026 so unless they’re doing something shady with the labels my brand new bags should be the new formula at 42%.

As I understand it, NorthfinUSA is a different company than Northfin. They serve as a retailer, but are not the same company. I too ordered a bag just a few weeks ago from Amazon. Amazon had the correct value on their website (42), but I got a 40% bag (go figure). Darius indicated that the bags are good for three years on the shelf, so it seems they did not throw away any of the old formula but kept packing it in the old bags and sending it to retailers. To avoid confusion (and perhaps avoid me misrepresenting the situation) bellow is the entire exchange:

Me:
There seems to be some discrepancies on the listed protein of the cichlid formula. Your site (https://www.northfin.com/services/cichlid-formula/) lists it as 42%, but my recently purchased bag lists it as 40%.

Ken, SuperCichlids, Chewy, and NorthfinUSA all list it as 40%, while amazon lists it as 42%.
I am curious what is going on here? What is the correct number?
---------------------

NF:
The protein got increased about 1.5 year back and all new packaging are with 42%. 42% is a correct. We do not have a control on what the sellers listing and they should update if something changes.

www.northfin.com website will have correct and the latest information.

Thanks for the quick reply. A few weeks ago, I purchased a cichlid bag from Amazon, and it states 40% protein on the bag. Since the change was made 1.5 years ago, does that mean this bag has been sitting on the shelf for a year and a half? Obviously you have no control over that, I am just wondering if all the 40% labels are old food?
----------------------

NF:
If the packaging is with the black bag and label, then its a 40% version, and if the packaging have printed bags then its a new version with 42%. Please note that the food have 3 year expiry date and are stable for such time. There will be very little to no difference nutritionally in dry pellet food in those 3 years.

Also, after the change was made some of the 40% version was still coming out from our facility till all materials got used up. I believe that the last 40% versions was shipped out around 6 months ago.

In any case your food is good and not considered old if is still did not passed expiry date.
