Dieing Plants Help!

Where did you get those plants? They are not my forte although I do have planted aquariums. I don't believe all of the plants I see in your tank are even aquatic. The broad leaf sword looking plants that you have are root feeders and need to be fertilized at the root level. They are probably packed in with the sand and not receiving nutrients. But first, check a plant dedicated website or consult with a LFS. I really don't think you have aquarium plants to begin with.

Howdy,

I have to agree that not all plants look aquatic to me. Many LFSs sell plants that survive under water for a very limited time. In this case, it's time to look for another store.

How old are your bulbs? Fluorescent lights should be switched out for new bulbs at least every year.

Do you use fertilizers? (liquid and substrate?)

What are your water parameters (hardness, pH, iron)?

Bought the plants at Petco.

Any suggestions as to what would do well in my tank, considering I will be planting them in sand.

Also my tinfoil Barbs like to nip at them. So looking for something on the hardy side.

I have to agree, some of the plants look like they are not aquatic plants. They will live for awhile, but not that long.

To really grow plants in a 125 gallon tank you need light, and lots of it. 80W is not going to do much given the height and size of the tank. I have 260W of compact flourescent lights on a 108 gallon tank, and that is adequate for most plants except the high light level plants.

As for the ferts, any is better than none. IMHO, there is no need to go crazy on some fert plan if plants are not the focus of the tank. Just add some commercial stuff as per the instructions.

CO2 is always an issue, but again, since it is not a plant themed tank, I wouldn't bother with it. It will help greatly, but not having it will not be an issue. Your plants just won't grow as fast.
