I was just wondering why the emphasis on turnover rates in ponds and tanks are different. seems everyone aims for 7-10x/hr on their tanks but ponds are usually 2-5x/hr. its all fish in water so why do tanks need to be filtered more than ponds. does this apply to indoor and outdoor ponds equally? arent indoor ponds just big tanks with the same elements acting on the habitat? wouldnt outdoor ponds need to be filtered more being that leaves, bugs and other debri add to the waste? just some thoughts rolling around in my head.

Ponds have a lot more water so the turn over rate can be much lower. Fish are sensitive to drastic changes in water. The less water you have the more drastic the change.

If you have, say 10 full grown oscars in a 1000G tank, you will need X amount of filtration. If you had 10 full grown oscars in a 10,000G pond, all the wastes get diluted into a much smaller toxicity so you dont need as heavy filtration. Wastage takes longer to accumilate.
