im thinking about buying a filter system but i dont know if theres a difference between a sump and a wet/dry filter. can anyone clarify this please, a picture or video of each filter system(if their different) would be helpful. thank you

Well I don't have any pictures to help you out but let me explain it this way. Your wet/dry filter will usually have a sump attached to it. A sump is basically a container for your aquarium water to collect usually under the tank so that your return pumps will always have water so they don't run dry. I guess the sump would be the wet part of your wet/dry filter. Also the sump is not a filter system, it's just there to collect the water from your overflows.

Sump:

An open (to atmosphere) external container that contains filter media and a return pump...

Wet/Dry:

A theory of filtration which allows water to trickle over certain types of 'bio media'. This allows the bacteria to at times be in contact with air (higher oxygen content) and at other times be in contact with water (higher nutrient content).

This, at least theoretically, gives the bacteria the "best of both worlds"...

In summary... the sump is the container... the Wet/Dry is the way it is set up...
