jeff rapps has some wild ones for sale. my question is what is the difference between a wild jag and the one i got from petland discount. i will say that mine is a savage when i drop those minnows in but other than that idk what it is he is lazy and slow moving he literally swims like 1 mph its kind of dissapointing and unentertaining.

They aren't a active fish lol. Mine for the most part either watches me, slowly patrols the tank or sits under his favorite fake tree root and observes. What do you expect of it lol. With out fry most jags aren't glass bangers. As for difference between wild caught and captive bred. I would say expect wild caught to take a lot longer to warm up to you. Be a little more territorial and way more predatory towards small fish. But those are just my thoughts and observations.

It would be better for his health if you mix up his diet.pellets have more nutrition.does he have tankmates? some large enough dithers might get him moving more.maybe 3 SD

hes in a tank with a mayan cichlid ,Dempsey ,firemouth and convict 125 gal ,hes 6 inches same size as the Dempsey and mayan. I notice he is already starting to attack the convict when it comes neer his favorite piece of driftwood, and he eats nls. he demolishes minnows tho eats like 6 in 1 minute loljag 7 6 13.png

My jag actually has never eaten a feeder fish. On purpose. It wasn't even offered a feeder until it was year and a half and it completely ignored it. I think my jag is lazy because its the undisputed leader in my tank

My little jag tends to wait til the light is off and the conditions resemble dusk. I tried her out in my sort of community tank and she had to be moved because she would tag all my large sae's when they were trying to bed. She managed to eat one completely and snap another in half. It was time for her to meet the slightly more aggressive tank =D But as others have stated, they aren't really glass bangers. They patrol and hide a lot.

Physically it seems that wild caught jags(and Dovii)got larger and more prominent teeth than a aquarium strain specimen of the same size...that's my personal opinion....
In general i see that my jag is somewhat less territorial and aggressive than my Midas who charges when i am a distance away.. my jag does not glass bang unless teased or provoked...or until i need to clean inside the tank....he attacks the algae magnet and brush relentlessly.....overall I think jags are more laid back until their space is invaded....

Here are my jags. the smaller one is an F1 from cichlidconnection and is my favorite jag ive ever owned. This guy has more personality than any dovii ive owned. he loves attention. every time i come into my fishroom he swims right up to me and gives me a stare, then he flares up and starts head shaking and dancing all over. he also has the profile and color i look for in jags. the larger ones are my wild pair i bought from Rapps. there is a big difference between yours and the ones rapps has. first is look at their face and how it is more sloped than yours and my little guy (more predatorial look), the colors are slightly different also. they arent very personable with me like my little one, they are more defensive over their young more than anything else. either way they are both nice. another thing is location. i dont recall any jags brought in from rio panama other than the ones Jeff just brought in. which means new genetics and looks. i will be growing out a few fry to see if once domesticated will it affect their color and profile like it does with some other species i have kept.
