I have a large male jag 8+ inches and while he has a territory in the corner of the tank he's pretty mellow. This all changes if someone decides to challenge him. I have a few large cichlids all about the same size as him butti and a midevil mayan etc but when one of them challenges he just absolutely destroys them in a fight. My Butti has way more aggression then him but in a fight my jag opens a can of whoop *** on him. Is this just my jags behavior or is everyone's else's the same not so much aggressive but dominant.

Well your jag adjust defending its area, that's not necessarily aggression or dominance just defense of its spot. The fish in tank that no one messes with would be the dominant one and show dominant behavior over those below it. Your jag just happens to rigorously defend its spot

What size tank do you have these fish in? High aggression CA's will claim huge amounts of tank space, and most will strive to eliminate the competition if they feel crowded.

Just normal jag behavior to be honest. They're not in your face aggressive unless not given enough space from my experience. No way a butti, red devil, & male jag will work in the long haul without somebody getting killed unless it's a huge tank.

Jags do claim huge territories and yours is the size where they start turning on. The males I've had usually have a kill switch engage moment where they lose it and decide everyone else has to go. My current male is relatively calm, but just has days where he loses his mind. Those teeth & athletic ability are hard for most cichlids to deal with.

yeah the teeth on him are pretty crazy he's a f1 and he's got some pretty mean teeth.

220 not real big for what you have in there. My male Jag grew up in a 125 with a foot long Gibby plec. At around 8ins, he decided the plec had to go. If I hadnt been watching the tank at that moment, there would have been plec parts everywhere. Now around 13ins, he is filling out the 125 more and more by the month.

yeah a 220 sounds big until you put in a bunch of aggressive fish lol. I've been pretty lucky Ive raised the fish together from around 2 inches so they are pretty good together but once in a while there's some chasing.
