Well I was looking at both of these canisters for a supplementary filter for my 135. I have a wetdry going rite now but I decided it wanst enough. My question is how do the classic and the pro 2 differ? They both pump about the same gph and they say they are good for about the same tank size. Anyone have experience with both?

Skillz: I've never tried the Pro II, but have used the 22-17 for 15 years or so. They are excellent filters-- silent, effective, reliable, and a very good value. The "kit" comes with media and double tap connectors for somewhere around $140. I can't say enough good things about this filter. One negative is that the design is ancient, so it may not have all the bells and whistles that the newer models have (e.g., self-siphon).

I'm not sure that the Pro II is any better in terms of filtration, but it is more expensive, so there you have it. Having said all of that, however, please remember that I've never tried the Pro II, so my advice is only half-baked. ;)

Bottom line: You can't go wrong with either filter.

Howdy,

I had an Eheim 2228 (professionel I) for several years (sold it in perfect condition) and have been running an Eheim 2211 (classic) for over 16 years now. The main difference between the Pro I and II is a priming aid, so I think I can compare the two filter series you asked about.

The classic series is an extremely reliable design, proven over the years. It's function-oriented, not necessarily designed for ease of use. I love them, they're workhorses and the absolutely best product for the money.

The pro series has more bells & whistles. It has media baskets, hose connectors, on/off valves, flow rate throttle, you name it. They are much easier to clean.

You will have to ask yourself how much you want to spend for extra comfort. Both filters will be extremely reliable and long-lasting.

hmmm...I might have to go with the classic, I really want the pro2 but Im only 15 and I dont really have a source of income. HarleyK how often to you have to clean your classic? How is it designed, like do you just layer the media inside the canister and the water runs through it? O and how does the ehiem wet/dry compare to the pro2 and the classic?

I was your age when I bought mine :headbang2

how often to you have to clean your classic?
My 2211: In a lightly stocked 20 gal gourami tank: Every 6-8 months.

Yes. No baskets. No hose connectors. You could either buy connectors or just deal with it twice a year - and spend the money on fish

I have never had one. The "old school" filters do the job just fine for me :grinyes:

Ok now Im seriously considering waiting longer and getting the 2260 now that Ive looked at it. What kind of media should I use in it?
