Canada... i wish.
to me... they look the same. im no gar expert so what is the difference?

im not sure but lets just say spotted gars wont be available at LFS,David Solomon is the only one i know whose breeding spotted gars and selling them for his research and stuff

really? btw were is solomon?

he'll be here soon, to point you to the sticky of Gar identification.
i can tell the difference nowadays, for i own a Florida, and the spotted does have a different look to it.

I have gone over all the stickies and still the ID difference baffles me. I read the "isthmus" has boney lateral plates in the spotted and not the florida.

I again AM NOT SURE and hopefully Solomon can do better to simplify this then I can, but the best that I can figure is that the area immediatly in fron of the gill plates are somewhat represented by:
O) or O))= Spotted Gar
O = Florida gar?

1-locality
2-physical appearence
3-morphology

regarding phy appearences...spotted gars have longer & narrower snouts compared to florida gars. they are also more slender built.

What does the term "isthmus" refer to in the context of a gar/ fish?

If you google it you get its geological meaning: a thin body of land surounded by water on both sides and connecting two larger body of land.
O---O
^ Isthmus?:popcorn:

Thanks for all the responses everyone :thumbsup:
