Hi,

Can anyone explain what is the difference between platinum variant and albino polys, other than the fact that albinos have red eyes?

Cheers!

Platinums have black eyes and are white in color. Albino have red eyes and are pinkish in color.

^x2.

Leucism (platinum) is when there is a reduction/lack of all the different types of pigment in the species, whereas albinism is just a reduction/lack of melanin and not any of the other pigments, which is why some color is still present. There are many other genetic disorders dealing with pigments as well, like melanism (excess of melanism, essentially the opposite of albinism), erythrism (gives the animal a reddish coloration), and xanthism/xanthochromism (yellow coloration).

What would the excess of melanism look like???

It's a dark colour pretty much. Very cool. never seen a melenestic bichir though. A "artifical melenestic bichir, is when it's born blind or had a eye injury and couldn't see a thing. A llthe bichir can see is black so it trys to blend in to it's sorroundings. voila!! there your "fake melenestic" bichir!!!

black all over no visible patterns even the belly would be black or the darkest colour of the bichir.
