What is the difference between African Rift Lake Cichlids and African Riverine & Madagascar Cichlids??? I noticed they were the two main categories (or 'sub-forums') under the forum Cichlids

Are those the only two types of Africans?

Rift lakes are the lakes to the East and due to rift between the plates .... The others well live in rivers, a lot Western African, or from the island of Madagascar... Different fish so different forums...

Two big differences:

Rift Lake cichlids come from the one of the three big crater lakes in Africa. These lakes have pretty hard water. Lake Tanganyika has a PH of up to 9!

The riverine and Madagascar cichlids come from neutral to soft water, more like the environment that South American cichlids come from.

The Rift Lake cichids can also be pretty aggressive, so you really have to know what you're doing when it comes to mixing them.

What kind of Africans would you put in a 350gal tank???

I'd go with a tank of large haps if that's the size, or maybe even a diverse Tanganyikan community

Put in some emperor cichlids.

All of the fish that you have listed below are all African Rift Lake cichlids, including the Tropheus.
