Electric blues are a light blue color throughout, while blue acaras are more of a dark color, almost like a stressed green terror.

E B Acaras are arguably a line bred variant, not a naturally occurring species.
It has also been suggested by some that they are hybrids(?).
The term Acara is an indigenous name, sort of generic catchal term for many cichlids in South America.
Although it is mostly associated with Andinoacara (the genus where the common Blue Acara resides) A pulcher.
There is also Acarichthys (the thread fin Acara)

, Cleithracara (the key hole cichlid)

There are many many others called Acaras in S America.
Here in Panama the generic term used for almost all cichlids is Chogorro, and used for many genera, just as Acara is in S America
although 1 species of Andinoacara has radiated here it is called Chogorro by indigenous groups.

In my experience, EBA are more of a silver-whitish color, rather than the brilliant blue shown in the pic. After a brief dabble in them, I think I prefer the wild-type with it's black bars and blue spotting.

That's true, they also vary. I have 5 and their colours are not all the same. Wild type is absolutely gorgeous as well!
