Has anyone had any success trying to breed pikes with a divider?

I remember Ken Davis mentioning someone created a special type of divider to spawn pikes which does not allow them to touch each other but does allow them to be close.

Has anyone had a pike female lay eggs on slate with the divider method?

I plan to create some type of modified divider like Ken mentioned but I am not sure what the original looked like.

I don't think there is much discussion on this approach but think it may be worth discussing with other pike keepers.

thanks.

i believe that basically, the divider has large openings like eggcrate for example, and a piece of slate is inserted under the divider allowing access to the slate from both sides while still seperating the fish

Soounds like a great approach, but, pikes breed in caves. . . that is what makes divider spawning of pikes sooooo difficult. For big SA/CA cichlids that are substrate spawners, this can usually work, simply because if it's the only place in the tank for them to lay, they will, even then, fertilization rates are generally way down. If you try it, I am certainly interested in the outcome.

I was going to use PVC and separate it some how with the egg crate. This would create the cave like shelter. My other thought was to crank up the temperature, feed well with ample water changes.

Yep, there was a piece of PVC seperated with some eggcrate. Then he put a powerhead on the males side blowing into the PVC to help increase the chances of fertilization. The slate idea would probably produce nothing but frustration for you.

Pretty cool and smart if you ask me. :)

Thanks. This is what exactly what I was looking for. It makes sense that the temperature is raised up to 86 degrees with good water circulation. You don't have to worry about the female being harmed this way. Appreciate you sharing this link.

That video is priceless. I completely forgot about it! Is Mack still working with his reverse trio? I really need to try this with my cobra group. Very inspirational, thanks for posting this!!!

Thats really cool and crazy at the same time. Its hard to recognize them almost as cobras, their colors are so different. VERY cool!! Inspirational for sure! There is hope for lenticulata after all.

I am curious how he gets the egg crate to stay though? Suction cups? That would be phenomenal to know.

Is that a 75gal tank? Or a 125gal? Agh! This makes me want to breed pikes even more! SO COOL!

It looks like he anchored the divider with suction cups on the sides and rock work on either side of the pvc sleeve.

He has another video posted of the pair which shows the female entering the sleeve. It's a really novel setup and it sounds like he had success with it. Just simply a great idea that I know I'll use down the road.
