I have 8 tinfoil barbs.
One of them is is well over 1 year old and the other 7 are less than 10 months old and all of them have lived together in my 280g tank since last November and are all growing well and appear very healthy.

Obviously, the older barb was MUCH bigger than his 7 buddies when they were first put into this tank, but now the younger 7 barbs have caught up the older older barb in size and have grown bigger than the older guy.

The older barb has a slightly different colored dorsal fin and tail fin than the other 7.

Are these fish different breeds with different growth rates??!!??

I have attached 2 photos.
The first photo is of the older barb with a full black dorsal fin and full red tail fin.

The second photo shows the same barb on the left and 2 other barbs. The other 2 barbs have a black and red dorsal fin and black and red tail fins

Probably just genetics... the parents of the 7 may have been healthier/faster growing than your original. Could have come from a completely different breeder or part of the world even.

how big are they now? and how big were they when you got them?

Those guys grow like weeds and are the closest thing to bulletproof. In all the years I have kept fish and tinfoils for that matter 40 years plus I have yet to see them get ick!

They are all around 6~7 inches now and were less than 1 inch when I got them.

I completely agree. I knew they grew fast, but they have grown faster than I ever imagined. My "slow" grower did show some signs of sickness a few weeks ago where he didn't eat for a couple of days and wasn't active as normal, but he soon got over it......I assumed it was due to the summer heat.

Yeah, that kinda makes sense. Thanks for the suggestion!
