what are the full sizes of some of the more popular rays, and how fast do they grow? also how do they measure them, from the tip of the tail or from the end of the body?

This is my first post here. Been lurking here for too long. I've been also searching this kind of information. I'm planning to get my first ray and it should be quite small. Tank bottom surface is 160x80cm and tank size ~800L(~210g). Been merely browsing fishbase, because I guess it's guite precise. Still the problem seems to be the fact that most of the rays are coming from Peru and it has been stated in some thread that at least Peru Hystrix(wd 35cm) is actually Motoro(wd 80cm) . Wd means diameter.

For smaller ray I guess Reticulata would be the safest pick. This is from my own observation. Or if you find someone who is breeding rays. Then you may see the parents and figure out that you get correct species. In Finland there are only few breeders with pups and prices are quite high.

I'd like to see a list for most common rays with sizes. And especially for these Peru imports.

The more popular rays get around 20 inches or bigger in captivity. People have larger ones but they have been kept in very large tanks with excellent water and diet. They measure them by disk diameter so a 20 inch ray can easily be 32 inches long or longer. Motoros which are the most common have the potential to reach 36 inches diameter, but seldom get much over 20.

scobina is smallest and pretty much impossible to get in the usa....retics figure 18" disk with 36" tail

I don't know WHY my first post got deleted..

but Rays are illegal in ORANGE COUNTY.. that is what I meant by 'They all get too big for California'..
