I have been hearing about all different types of tanks: standard, long, show tanks, breeders, tall etc. What is the difference between them all and what are the different purposes of each kind like what makes a breeder tank a breeder tank? Is it better than a normal tank for breeding? My tank is 85 gallons and dimensions are 72"Lx15"Wx18"H. What would mine be considered?

Breeder tanks: tend to have wider / bigger footprints compared to the same size tanks... i.e. say a standard 25G was 24" (L) X 15" (W), a 25G breeder tank maybe 24" (L) X 18" (W)

Display tanks: Don't think there is a real different here, just a term people use when they have tanks they are proud of... i.e. a lot of planted tank people will call their planted tanks a display tank, or people with really nice show fish may call their tank a display tank...

Long tanks: as the name states, while breeder tanks have a wider footprint, these tanks tend to have a longer footprint

Tall tanks: similar the Long tanks, except they are extra tall, for example, standard 200G may come with a height of around 24" - 28", but a tall tank may come with a 36"+ height...

Standard, long and tall tanks refer to the size of the tank whereas display and breeder tanks refer to the stock of the tank. A display tank would be their main show tank and depending on stock, it would generally be stocked with males since they could exhibit brighter and more bold colours. A breeder tank would be a tank dedicated for breeding purposes and can be kept in multiples on tiered stands.

Show/display tanks doesnt really have a set rule. Its whichever tank in your house thats prominently displayed and usually has your best stock. Show tank is imo any tank that is not used for any other purpose, and flashiest stocked. For example i have lots of tanks but i only consider 3 of them "show tanks".

Long, tall or wide is generally tagged on to the tanks that differ from the more common or standard tank for that volume. Display or show is something retailers add on to spice up the description and have nothing to do with size or shape.

Your 85g tank would be considered a long. A more standard sized 80-90g tank would be considered those with the common 48x18" footprint.

Here in the States "breeder" refers to a size. Breeder tanks are wider then they are tall. Common breeder tanks are 33B, 40B, 50B all with 36x18" footprints and then there is also a 30B with a 30x18" footprint. Once tanks get to the larger volumes they are generally referred to as "wide".
