Hello all,i have a 4inch dovii i think is a male.however today i purchased 2 more that are only 2inchs.the 2 newys have very pointy dorsal and anal fins and they look rather detailed on their bodys[spots & blue hues].also the 4inch original one has tiny black dots just behind gills and a lot on its lower body, but rounder fins.my point is r their 2 types of dovii?i mean could i have 2types as theirs sighns of males with all 3.r costa rican and nicaraguense dovii the same as each other?does one grow bigger.man im confused.any input would be great.ta.

there are different sexes, dovii from different places such as nicaragua, and costarica, get some different marking's and colors, as your seeing, but in general stay the same. only one speices, and all grow the same, personally i get all my dovii wild from nicaragua, and i've seen what your seeing on some of them.

thanks, and obviously there are different sexes, however the differences i am seeing with the above mentioned are as i said looking male!!!because never have i seen a female with pointed fins or have i ever seen a fm with tiny black spots directly infront of pectoral fin.this is why im asking the questions that i have asked.heres one for you then,do all male 2-4inch dovii have very pointed fins?i will post some pics when i can.

i am curious to where you bought the different dovii, did you buy them from the same place?
because, by my best guess, i'm guessing that if they were purrcased form a fish store, than they would have not been from different regions, becuase the fry all come from, the same captive breeding parents, but if you got them form a retailer, who collects wild cichlids, from different region's, such as costa rica, and nicaragua, then there's a chance there from different regions, so you'd be seeing the different, color patterens , and such.

the 2 small ones r from 1 pet store & the larger one from another.i am unsure but as far as i know here in australia we cant import dovii only purchase from home bred stocks.[ie..locally bred.]also its unlikely that all r from same parents as they were purchased 2mths apart and from different suburbs of bris city.none of the pet store owners i know go fish collecting ever,so all i can say is perhaps dovii are not always as identical as i thought.i will keep u all posted and thanks XR 4 ur input.do u have dovii XR?

i doubt those are wild caught probly f3 or f4
