I have been wanting some for quite a while.. I am moving soon and will be getting a larger tank..

I dont think I quite have room, YET, for my true want fish (RTC and Shovelnose) and I have been thinking about getting some of the Eye Biters.

I would probably only have the one species in the tank.

I need 100+ gals right? I will be shooting for 200-250+ with my next tank purchase. How many could I fit comfortably into that space roughly..

Also are they slow growers?

Now if I want other species in the tank, what would work best? So when I decide what I am doing I can bulk order everything and not muck around with multiple orders and such.

Anything else I should know, please let me know :)

Ya, your going to need a 100g or larger for D. Compressiceps , The best tankmates for them are other haps of similar size or their own kind of similar size. In a 125g long tank you could probably fit 4 or so in a tank? but thats if you plan to keep other large haps haps in with them. If you plan to keep only D. Compressiceps in the tank, then you could probably have 8 or so of them in a 125g long. They aren't slow growers but they aren't fast growers either, they grow about as fast as any other malawi hap

Also, are you really sure you want to keep a RTC or Shovelnose? They will eventually need 600g or bigger tanks and grow fast. They're best kept in ponds or very large tanks in my opinion. They cost a lot to feed too I believe, especially when bigger.

I have 5 of them in my 200 gallon tank with other African cichlids. They've been together for 3+ years, used to be 6 of them, lost 1 to bloat. They are all at least 10 inches. Only 2 of the dominant ones have colored up nicely. Each occupy one side of the tank. Very hardy and definitely one of my favorites...

Like Nick said, other large haps work well with D. compressiceps. Six foot tanks in excess of 100 gallons are best so they have their needed swimming space. Feed them well with a high quality food and they'll be pushing full grown in two years or so.

The only downside I've had with them is that they can be more passive than other large haps from my experience, but certainly interesting and cool fish, although I prefer D. kiwinge

They are an awesome species.

Don't want to derail the thread too much, but here's my old one...was killed by a tankmate back when I had my cichlids

I figured, I plan on getting a 200-250 gal once I move, which I hope will be soon but short sales take forever or so Ive heard.
I would prefer to keep it to just the one species really, maybe something similar but again it will depend on what I find that I like.

Yes I am sure I want to keep RTC and Shovelnose lol if I wont be getting them until I have space for either an outside or garage pond for them, MAYBE one RTC if I have a min 800gal tank for it but until I can house them and have no fears of them not having the space they need, I wont get them.
Feeding costs arent an issue for me ;), until I can meet their needs they wont be living with me lol I am not the type to just go get something and then try and figure out how to keep it :grinno:
