GE makes a dimming compact fluorescent light bulb (called the Energy Smart Dimming Spirals) that is specially designed for use with dimming switches. The bulbs runs about 15-23wats and around (some bulbs) 4100k-2500k. The problem I'm looking over is how can u get these to work for the fish tank? In drop lights i can under stand, but if you have a canopy you would have to make some kinda of sideways socket. With reflectors. This light would replace the LED i see people using for Moonlighting... It would be cheaper/ less usage on energy with the LED but don't u think the DCF will give the tank a hold different look? What do you think. I"m playing around with my dimmer in my room... the moon doesn't always give a blue look to the water.... I think this will look awesome inside a tank.

That does sound pretty cool. Any links for info on these?
Regarding your mounting questions...Could you mount the fixture on a cross beam over the tank within the canopy? (If I understood your question right)

You can still pick up those double ended incandecent ceiling fixtures. The bulbs your talking about are self contained so theres not a lot of wiring invilved. Attach say... 4 of these to the underside of your hood...wire them all together and screw in 8 bulbs. A reflector is as simple as contact cement and reynolds wrap.

yeah i added another 2 socket fixture to my 20 gallon to add another couple lights and it was simple, white wire to white wire, black wire to black wire.

I don't know about that spectrum. Never seen that low before.

We use a lot of those bulbs in our house and they all say 6200K... They are quite efficiant and the light per watt is impressive. Reciently....red,blue,and black light versions have become available.
