Hey All,
I'm starting this thread in the hopes of updating as I go with progress. I'm very excited to share this with everyone and would greatly appreciate some feedback and advice. I currently have a 60gal polypterus tank (another story) and am converting my old 30 gal grow out into a real model of a river system to ultimately house some hillstream loaches and leaf fish. Sooo here we go.
I have read PLENTY of articles on DIY tank backgrounds and here is what I have deduced: For my background I am going to start with styrofoam sheets that I will cut, shape, carve, and glue into a rocky river edge. After the styro is ready to go I will apply the proper quantity of concrete layers and pigment. The first question I have is that concrete will increase the pH of the tank drastically at first I know. I read that using an epoxy resin (or gel coat) could seal the concrete from the water and thus not cause pH issues. Is this true and advisable? Anyway, I will post pics asap and once I am done include a detailed step-by-step guide from my experience.
Thanks!
