How do I change a dirty substrate? I have been told a power head to circulate the poop to the filter, get a geophagus, etc. what do I do?

Change or clean? Too me change is taking al of it out and adding new substrate.

If your just trying To get the waste to the filter either add a power head or gravel vac the substrate more often.

If you add a power head point it towards the filter on the opp side of the tank about mid level or whatever height gets the most current on the bottom or you may be able to get away with point the tip downward some

You dont change your substrate when its dirty (If i understood correctly). You get a gravel vac or siphon and dig it into the gravel and it will suck up all the dirt and not the rocks.

+ 1 to powerhead.

Adding a strong powerhead on my 125 with a sump did better it terms of mechanical filtration than adding an fx5.

Literally, I have the Fx5 set up as mostly mechanical filtration and the tank is more clear with it running, but its absolutely crystal clear when the powerhaeds on.

If you already syphon your gravel... powerhead.. if you don't... start syphoning. even a powehead isn't going to do much if its getting between the rocks already. Once a thorough syphon of the tank has been done sometimes adding more water circulation (powerhead) keeps stuff from lodgeing into the cracks easiler... but it won't omit the need to syphon compleately.
