Can you tell by these pics if I have a true Texas? Seems to be a disagreement between what I believe and what I have been told.

I was under the impression it was a true Texas, but some seem to think it Carpintis.

Sorry to be such a n00b

looks either carpintis or possibly a mix of the two. def not a pure cyano. the spotting on its sides is too big. cyanos have small separated spots all over and yours has longer spotting

that fish is not pure cyano. looks to be either a mix of cyano/carpintis or a variant of carpintis

I see mainly a carpintis, but a hybrid of cyano/carpintis is just as likely . . . I don't think it is a "true" h. cyanoguttatus Texas . . .

Thanks, Looking at pics I can see what your referring to about the spotting, I guess the black marks are what through my off. The carpintis I have seen in pics dont have the Black markings on the side.

Guess I should update my sig, thanks for your help any chance you where able to tell the sex?

well it looks like every texas cichlid i have caught here in texas sooo..... i would just go with texas.
imo it doesnt really matter. yea its nice to know but i mean when there is this much debate just pick one and go with it bc no one will ever really know

It's spotting looks nearly identical to the Carpintis sp. Rio Tamuin I used to have.

^^
Nevermind, I take that back. :nilly:

I pulled up an old picture of mine just to double check because I haven't had this fish for a couple of years. Obviously I forgot what he looked like lol.

Here's his picture. The facial markings were more "wormy looking" than yours' but the rest of the spotting is very similar imo....at least comparing to the first three pics.
