Can anyone explain these disappearing and reappearing spots that my silver dollars display? They come and go at the same time on all four of them.

Howdy,

May fish change colors or pattern depending on their mood/mental stage/reproductive stange/health etc. My Blue Gouramis get dark stripes and look like completely different fish when they fight. The recessive female sometimes loses her spot when she gets chased around.

Keep a close eye on the fish, observe the circumstances when they change patterns (morning vs evening / feeding time vs down time/ people in the room vs only you/ quiet vs loud environment) and I am sure you will find a pattern

Yep, One of my fancy guppies goes from translucent green to a solid dark blue when i feed my fish. And my most recent batch of guppy fry get blue in spots, they look pokadotted when they eat.

My silver dollars do the same...

When it first started i thought it was an illness.

I have 8 dollars and only 4 of them show these black dots and blackening to the fins too. Their red colour becomes more vibrant too. I have found that when they are showing these colours they seem to be chasing the fish with no change in colouraton.

Not totally sure but I think its a sign that they are trying to show dominance and trying to show off to the females. My larger dollars show these markings 90% of the time now.

thank you all, I thought it was kinda weird, and wanted to make sure there was not a illness that was just reaccuring. Their fins also change--glad to hear that others have that too.

new scale coloration: but I think this one is just fine.;)

GREAT picture!!!

could they be changing cause they are stressed out?

Sounds like breeding signals they are what? 4-5"?

not stress. They all show at the same time. Come to think of it, I have caught them doing that "folding-anal-fin thing". No eggs scatterd that I know of. If they did it would have probably been fish food for some lucky tank mates. Thanks guys.

It's a normal thing, as you have already been informed. Depends on the mood/ activity/ sexual stage of the fishes. My BBSDs do it all the time. If you get fry, post pics for us. Good luck.

Best regards.

Daniel.
