I'm considering setting up a aquarium that will be wide and shallow. The width of the tank will be greater than any of the doors in my apartment. This won't be a problem for the tank because I can just turn it on it's side, but the stand will be too big to fit through the door.

I'm thinking about how best to build a strong stand that can also be easily disassembled if it has to be moved. I have some thoughts, but I wanted to see if anyone here has successfully built something like this or has any good ideas about how best to do it.

I'm hoping for a sleek finished look along the lines of my old paludarium stand, though considerably taller:

I've seen builds where the stands are skinned with an extremely thin layer held on with either velcro or embedded magnets. It takes a bit to get lined up right but can look just as good as any other stand. As for the stand frame, if you attach the pieces together with lag bolts and nuts instead of screws then you should be able to take it apart into smaller pieces easily. It might take some work to get the design right but I'm sure it can be done.
