So, I just noticed my stick on thermometer at 82 degrees and it's usually around 76 to 78. I checked the heater and it was stuck in the on position. The element was glowing red. I tried to adjust the switch on top and the knob broke off in my hand. I'm just glad that I have made a habit of looking at the thermometer daily. This could have been devastating!

I have those stick-on thermometers on all my tanks. Fluval sells a mini one in the UK that is very discrete and I check them at every tank interaction.

I've been fine with just the one heater of the correct wattage for quite a while. If it sticks on it takes a long time to heat the tank. If it fails to heat it doesn't drop that much. I've had no difficulty intervening with either senario. Everyone's different but I'm confident my fish are not at risk.

Although there are stick on thermometers on my tanks, I habitually touch the aquarium glass when I walk by them just to make sure. Lol.
