I picked up a 155gal bowfront the other day and noticed that some of the black silicone around the bottom of the tank has a swirly orange-ish thing happening. The tank was up and runnin when i went to check it out before i bought it so i know it holds water and the seals seem fine besides the weird color soo im wondering if this is just something that happens to black silicone(all my other tanks have had clear) Is this normal/ok? or a bad sign?

Good question. I picked up a used 72g bowfront with the exact same orange discoloration on the black silicone. The owner said it held water fine, but I haven't filled it yet.

which brand of tank is it? I have heard Perfecto (marineland) tanks with black silicone can discolour (turn tan coloured). I have seen some hobbyists on other boards commenting on it. however, I don't know if this necessarily means that the seal is bad.

some of the empty Perfecto tanks at my LFS have black silicone that is not nearly as black as the black silicone used by Aqueon on their bowfront tanks. it almost looks like sort of an 'olive' colour. it might just be the kind they used.

all my tanks have black silicone and all have remained black over time, but my tanks are Aqueon and Miracles (a canadian domestic brand).

It is also possible the previous owner had well water with a high iron content. This could be a reason for the orange discoloration.

I've had it happen to a perfecto tank. BigAls replaced it free of charge. I sent pictures, and Perfecto wanted to see the tank in person. It was holding water.
I've got another ..AllGlass and it's got a couple of spots like that as well.
Only thing both had in common was black silicone and EcoComplete substrate.
