Hi All,

i'm a little concerned that i'm having to write this...

..My Hoplias Curupira has been behaving strangely for the last couple of days, bobbing around on the surface, thrashing, heavy breathing etc. It looks as though he's hit his head, something he's done before but usually he's fine a little while after. this time, is different, to the point that he's too dopey to avoid the filter intakes. I'm doing a big water change as we speak and throwing some melafix in but I'm really concerned. Anyone have any other ideas, beyond the usual stuff? If I had a spare tank, I'd separate him but I don't have anything suitable at the moment.

Well, small update. He seems a little better at the moment but certainly not perfect- his breathing has calmed and is now happy sitting on the bottom of the tank calmly beneath his favourite piece of wood. It looks like he hit his eye as there is a mark both on his head and accross his eye lens so that would partly explain why he seems so dopey if he's struggling to see. The only problem at the moment is that the other Wolves are moving in to investigate and have started snapping at his fins so it's looking more and more like i'm going to have to separate, probably with a divider, although at this point, I'm not sure where to start building a 36" long divider that is Bass and Wolf proof. Anyone got ideas?

As per usual, everyone else is fine and dandy, but it just seems typical that it would be the one fish in the tank I would get genuinely concerned about. I was even considering getting another but if he's not 100%, then adding another could be a bad idea so I've had to pull the plug on that for the time being.

Well, after a few ups and a great deal of down, it looks as though the big guy is not long for this world. I've tried what I could but after some progress, he took a massive dive this morning and now hes upside down, fighting for breath. At abot 5 thisnmorning I head a lot of splashing and crashing and, upon investigation, discoverd the big guy not looking too good. When he calmed, he looked ok but an hour later, he was as he is now. I tested the water, thinking there may have been a spike in ammo or nitrite but everything is perfect. I did a water change the previous evening and added salt so was hoping this may have helped if there was an infection. Apparently not. I'd also sought the advice of an aquatic vet but it looks as though its too late.

Upset doesnt feel strong enough.

Sucks! Sorry to hear...........

Thanks guys. I want a new one(Or three), however, the difficulty is finding them over here for reasonable money (Sods law that I missed out on another large one recently). The only thing I can think of at this point was the cause being the introduction of a new fish earlier last month. I'd more or less sterilied the tank and fish of all pathogens with various precautionary treatments and so on, so it seems odd that it happened after the introduction of a new fish. Everyone else is fine, the Golds are still ferocious, so t least I still have Wolves. It just feels like there's a bit of a hole without the black in the tank.

Ho hum.
