You can't really guarantee that larger cichlids won't eat smaller tetras. Even peaceful fish like Uaru and Mesonauta will hunt small fish when they're hungry. I've had cichlids that left small fish alone, and others that eat anything tiny. It's got a lot to do with the individual fish. I've also had discus wipe out cardinals!

One thing to keep in mind is that your discus should be in a group of six or more to feel comfortable, and they should be adult size before you introduce them to other large fish. I have kept discus with both Uaru and Mesonauta, and several people keep discus with more peaceful Geophagus like the orangeheads, but you need a large tank and a quiet spot for the discus to get away from commotion if they're feeling stressed or spooked.

My Mesonauta nipped at the discus a bit and made them skittish, so I ended up getting rid of them. U. amphiacanthoides did much better.

You could probably keep them with Heros as well, provided that your particular individuals weren't too aggressive. I've kept discus and angels with severums and it works out well as long as you have a passive severum.

It's really going to depend on the size of your tank. 150 gallons and 500 gallons are worlds apart. I wouldn't mix discus with Uaru in a 150g, for instance, because you're dealing with two species of large-growing, shoaling fish and you'd need more space. But a 500 gallon would be great. So the final size of the tank will narrow it down further.

Really you kept discus with uarus? My uaru pair are bossy bully fish I would never keep them with discus. My uarus get really aggressive when it is feeding time and I don't think that is good for discus. Put in a big enough tank it could work I guess.

I have a Festivum with my discus and and he will nip at the discus a little. Really no more then they do to each other. I think he thinks he is a discus.

Severeums could work I keep them but not with my discus. From what I know of them and their personality they are be very laid back nice fish that do well with many different kinds of fish. I think Geos would be good.

Pretty much all your fish picks could work depending on the tank size and the fish. All cichlids even ones that are the same can be very different.

But one thing is for sure big fish eat little fish.

Uaru amphiacanthoides are aggressive eaters but they are often fairly passive toward other fish. This isn't always the case, depending on how they were raised, tank size, whether they're paired off or not, etc. If you keep them in groups of 4 - 6, they tend to squabble with each other and ignore tankmates.

Like severums, and any other cichlid really, it will depend on their personality. Growing out small Uaru with adult discus is the best way to go. That's how I always did it. Uaru grow fast, so it's not like you have to go through a long wait to get the desired adult size on them.
