There seems to be a lot of people who have discus on here. How many of you guys are using some type of r.o. system?

I am wanting to keep a couple of discus and was wondering if I should go ahead and get a r.o. system or not. I have kept them before, a long time ago, and never had one hooked up.

Plus, do you guys do anything to the water you put back into your tanks when you do a water change?

No need for an r/o unit unless your water has an insanely high pH....above 8.2 or so. Water hardness doesnt matter either with discus. The only reason why you would need an r/o unit is if you are trying to breed them.

What is your pH out of the tap, and what is the pH after it has aged for 24 hours (aerated)??

My new water only goes through a sediment filter and a 3 cubic foot carbon canister to remove chlorine. It then goes into a storage tank where it is aerated and heated for a minimum of 4 hours. Nothing is added to the water.

some of the most beautiful discuss tanks I have ever seen have had a r/o unit built on to the tank.I know a couple of people that add four tablespoons of marine salt to their water after every water change.I am thinking of doing a discuss tank but i am getting a r/o unit because we have hard water, I guess it just depends on your water quality.

Hi there,

I only use 40 % mix of R.O. water mixed in with tap water when breeding. but the rest of the time I just use regular tap water. never had a problem.

my tap water is around a pH of 7.5

i add marine salt only when i see the discus might have a case of gill flukes.

i agree with ryan, you don't need an ro unit unless you are breeding or you have excessively hard water, like i do. how many gallons per day ro unit are you looking to get?lmk thanks
