I am in the process of cycling a tank for some stingrays. I have heard that discus are suitable tankmates. Is this true???

Thanks!

So I should start with discus, make sure they are healthy, and then get a couple of rays??

My tank is a 125 gallon, if that helps you.

Thanks again!

I have a wet dry filter and a H.O.T. Magnum on the tank now. Do you think that is enought filtration? What would you recommend?

The filtration you have sounds fine...plenty of biological filtration and with the HOT filter, it should keep the water clean. But, I do recommend you add on another type of filter, like an Aquaclear 500 or so for added filtration. Other than that, you seem to be set to go.

Oh, and which to get first...personal preference I guess. You could get the discus first and get them settled into the tank, then get the rays later.

I lOve that combination!! Good Luck With that! :D

It is a great combo and one I did for years but there are a couple of things to watch out for....

1. make sure you discus are big (5 plus inch IMO) before you ever start to mix them
2. mix them with rays that don't get too big or put them together in a tank that is too small or you may have some dead discus.
3. mix with less aggressive rays if you can...like no motoros

It should work out great. I have a had a stingray in with 2 discus for a about 6 months now and have had no problems. I did have the discus in the tank first so they were settled. It works out great because they both prefer regular water changes.

What kind of rays are best for discus? And how much do they cost? lets just say a small size ray.
