Ive been keeping tanks and ponds for a while now. Many years ago I had discus. The standard royal blue, brown and hecks were the only ones available back then. No issues besides they would eat smaller tetras and occasionally nip at each other. Anyway I figured I'd recently fill my 300 gallon with a bunch of discus and some cardinal tetras. What a mistake! I've been battling parasites and possible bacterial issues for the past 4 weeks! Lost only one fish but the upkeep on this thing is pretty ridiculous. It seems that discus have become a bunch of disease carrying fish. Constant water changes, salt, prazi, about to give metro a try soon as well. Yeah yeah yeah... ammonia, water parameters, blah blah blah. Everything is perfect... Seems the LFS get these fish and they are already sick. They mask the sickness by adding a ton of copper treatment products to their tanks and then good luck to the idiot who buys them. Stupid.... I'll take my river monsters any day over these high maintenance disease infested fish.

LFS seems to be the big problem here. LFS, for the most part, aren't equipped & committed to care for discus. The fish either end up with parasites from being tied into a central system or stunted from insufficient diet & poor water quality. Its best to buy from a reputable online dealer - Discus Hans, Kenny's Discus or Mike Beals to name a few.

This forum is decent in regards to discus info, but Simply Discus is the much better forum to answer your discus questions. Good Luck!
